Weather Metrics Reports PDF Print E-mail

For each of the locations, RisQuant Weather Metrics distills thirty to sixty years of data, nearly one million points of data, into eight pages of detailed statistics. Variables include: TMAX, TMIN, TMID (average of max and min), cumulative CDDs, cumulative HDDs, number of days with highs 90° and above and number of subfreezing lows.

Nearly every (21 of 23) locations report at least fifty years of data, all through December 2008. The extraordinary longevity of the data means that we report stable distributional statistics beyond merely the average. With our metrics, an analyst can reliably estimate tail probabilities.

Where does our data originate? We have compiled temperature histories from the National Climatic Data Center ‘First Order Summary of Day’ and ‘CF6’ reports. While these are preliminary reports and the datasets have not undergone final quality control checks at the NCDC, their quality is outstanding.

Eight pages for each location:

  1. Overall mean, standard deviation, skew, kurtosis, 90th, 50th, and 10th percentiles by month for each of the variables (TMAX, TMIN, TMID, cCDD, cHDD, TMAX(90+) and TMIN(32-).
  2. Overall mean, standard deviation, skew and kurtosis for multi-month strips for cCDDs and cHDDs and five day rolling average temperature strips including mean and standard deviation. These strips correspond to popular weather derivatives trading vehicles.
  3. Average TMAX for each year & month.
  4. Average TMIN for each year & month.
  5. Cumulative Cooling Degree Days by year & month.
  6. Cumulative Heating Degree Days by year & month.
  7. Cumulative days with highs ≥90° by year & month.
  8. Cumulative days with lows ≤32° by year & month.
